Lancaster trudges further into the cave, following the blue glow. Though the cave is completely natural, it does have elements of civilization carved into its walls and floors, as if someone was slowly building up rooms, preparing this to be a new building.
The center of the cave opens up to a vast chamber. In the center, a pedestal holds aloft a clear crystal from which a blue glow shines. Lancaster looks at it strangely as he steps up to it. He doesn't know how exactly the crystal is growing blue, so he steps up to it and reaches to take it. He stops suddenly, noticing that the crystal is somehow connected to the pedestal. Something could snap, either naturally or alien-made, that could kill him, so he decides not to, but he stares deep into the crystal.
He sees gas swirling inside, rising from the bottom, as if fed by the pedestal, and the light shines from the center by an unknown source. It is the gas which turns the light blue as it fires out from the crystal. Lancaster wonders how many centuries it has been doing this.
He looks around at the cave and suddenly notices thousands of crystals which are reflecting the blue light. It appears that the crystal's light exists for their appearance. Is it a map perhaps? Could this mean that the Zeborno were a star faring race, or were they just observant of the stars. He notices that one crystal's size is slightly larger than the others. This could mean something. (Use all of this information in Relic Worlds, Book 5 - Catacombs of the Forgotten.)
This certainly would fall under the category of "worth looking at" that Taro was talking about, so Lancaster decides not to press his luck. He gathers all the information he needs to follow up, then leaves the cave, take care not to be followed by the animals, and calls for Little Jack to come pick him up. He will tell Taro that there is a town which seems empty, but, as long as they have the weapons to keep the animals at bay, there is something amazing in the woods. Perhaps he will come back later to see more, but if he doesn't get out now, he might not live to tell anyone about this discovery.
