The ground shakes harder with each crash on the ground. The creature fades in through the fog. It sees Lancaster immediately. Staring at him, the creature takes its time. Lancaster is trapped now. He can't even make a break for the woods, and behind him is only the empty void of the canyon.
Then Lancaster hears a familiar roaring of a different kind behind hm. Looking around, he sees Odin's Revenge, Little Jack's ship, rise up out of the fog and drift just below the edge of the canyon. The beast races at Lancaster, and Lancaster makes a running leap onto the roof of the ship. As soon as he's made the jump, Little Jack swoops away from the beast, which reaches out at the ship and bats at it. Its long jaw knocks against it, sending it whirling away with Lancaster rolling around vulnerably on its roof.
He almost rolls all the way off, but catches a section of outside piping just in time.
Little Jack tries to jolt the ship as little as possible as he gains control and drifts to the other side of the canyon. He sets down so Lancaster is able to roll off the top and almost literally kiss the ground. He will have plenty to tell the archeologists, but he's not sure how much they will benefit from it. As for himself, Lancaster is going to want to explore some of these other planets to see if indeed the Zebornos were star faring, and if he might be able to solve the mystery of their disappearance, or, better yet, even find them.
