Inside one of the buildings, Lancaster brakes suddenly, and runs back out the way he had come. Behind him, the beast continues following the pattern Lancaster had been following, even if he doesn't see Lancaster between every building.
Having outsmarted the beast, Lancaster now has a choice whether to call it now by having Little Jack pick him up, or press his luck by returning to the observatory where he found the beast.
