Lancaster dips into the clouds and disappears in a sea of white. He can't see anything, and presumably, the flying creature cannot see him.
Then, very suddenly, the monster appears above him, charging out of the cloud cover, his eyes fixed on Lancaster. It's as if he knew exactly where Lancaster was, and perhaps he did; after all, not all animals use the same method to see. Lancaster might just have given himself a disadvantage by flying into the clouds.
The beast crashes straight through Lancaster, breaking up his glider, as well as most of his bones, and sending him tumbling head over heels to the ground; a long, long way down.
