Lancaster drops the egg right where he stands. Though it lands in the soft moss, he thinks he hears a crack from it. No matter at this point, he has to get away.
Lancaster jumps clear out of the nest and dashes away as fast as he can. The bird takes chase until he is clear of the nest, then it stands guard at the edge, screaming at him.
Lancaster doesn't look back. He just runs as fast as he can into the depths of the woods.
