As Lancaster wanders through the fog, he begins to notice thin trunks reaching out of the ground at slants in several directions. The ground beneath him gets moist, and becomes more and more wet until he finds himself in a lagoon. There is a plethora of sounds from all sorts of creatures, but the whaling one is ahead. He at last sees it, a dog-like creature on four legs with a long, curling tail. The dog sees Lancaster, raises up on two legs, and Lancaster gets a good look at its face. It has the features of a monkey, with a small nose, a large, almost grinning mouth, and big eyes. It stops howling, staring at Lancaster transfixed. It then shifts its tone and begins bellowing in another octave.
Its call is echoed around him, and several other monkey-dogs make their appearance, lowering from trees and raising out of the water. Their high pitched whales end with a stuttering cackle that sounds like they're laughing at Lancaster. On all sides of him, they begin to close in.
What should Lancaster do?
